My father, Emmitt L. Holler, was born in Troutman, North Carolina on July 23,
1909. He married Elsie Mae Beaver, born June 21,1911, a daughter of Lewis Robert
Beaver and Lillie Tucker Beaver. My parents were married on August 17, 1929,
only two months before the Great Depression. When Emmitt was a child a dinkey
(a small locomotive) ran over his ankle, nearly amputating his foot. (The injury
later prevented him from being inducted into the service during the World War
II.).
Emmitt went to Jacksonville, Florida when he was 15 years old. Ther e, he went
to barber college. He liked Florida and lived with a Spanish family during his
stay there. He almost went to Argentina during that time when the Argentine
government was giving land away to Americans who would emigrate there. He worked
at different odd jobs during his youth. For one, he worked for several weeks
for a Virginia mining company where they used dynamite to loosen coal for later
retrievall. The workers were paid by the car load of coal which resulted in
very little pay. He also worked for his brother, Lewis Holler, when Lewis was
building bridges in Alexandria, Virginia.
My father went back to Florida in 1956 to the house where he had stayed during
the 1920's. The Spanish family was no longer there and the neighbors did not
remember them. We went on to Cuba that summer for a vacation. Batista was in
power at the time but Castro and his followers were nearby. I remember seeing
soldiers with their machine guns stationed on the rooftops of the houses and
the hotels.
My father retired from the Washington D.C. Water Department in 1972. He loved
and respected his family and relatives, just as they loved him. He worked very
hard during his lifetime. He belonged to the Masonic lodge in Anacostia. He
died from lung cancer at Prince George's Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland on July
14,1974. I am my parents' only child

Dorothy claims that her mother used to tell people
that somone must have changed children at the hospital because no daughter of
hers would be short, fat and ugly. That changed when Dorothy grew into womanhood
- in fact, in Middletown, Indiana, people thought she looked a lot like Elizabeth
Taylor.
Dorothy met Lloyd Conn while Lloyd stayed at the Holler residence on Frank Street
in Flint, Michigan. Lloyd used to write her notes and place them in the recipe
box. Dorothy would read them, write a note of her own, and put it back in the
box. They did this for 4 years until they got married October 11, 1941. After
their marriage, Dorothy wrote notes and placed them in Lloyd's lunch box. He
would return a note at the end of the day. According to Dorothy, they did this
every d ay of their 44 year long marriage.[Asmussen.FTW]
Dorothy is a very accomplished and active lady. She does a lot of crafts, including
designing and making her own cards. She lives in the old Conn family house dating
back to ante-bellum times.
Dorothy says that her mother told her that as a baby she was so short, fat and
ugly, she couldn't be a child of hers. Dorothy says her mother always preferred
Evelyn (her blonde sister) over her and that she (Dorothy) didn't feel loved
by her mother.

to Glenn L. and Anna Marie (Asmussen) Holler . Evelyn has one older sister,
Dorothy. Her f ather was a tool and die maker and her mother was a salesperson
prior to marrying her father. The family lived in the Mott Park area of Flint.
She attended Durand Elementary and Longfellow Jr. High Schools. She went to
Central High School and graduated in 1939. Evelyn worked as a Service Representative
of Michigan Bell Telephone. She and Bob met at a Valentine's Day dance. She
married Robert P. Yankle on Sep. 14, 1946, in Flint, Michigan. The couple had
four children and lived in the Northwest ar eaof Flint, and then, Interlochen,
Michigan. Evelyn worked at the Library in Interlochen and loves gardening, ceramics,
and crocheting as hobbies .

Both my parents were workaholics. They never took a vacation because, as they
averred, "Vacations are for rich people". Both of them were cold, and never
gave me or my sister a hug or compliment.
Evelyn married Robert Palmer Yankle 14 Sep 1946 in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan. Robert was born 16 Apr 1922 in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan, died 2 Apr 1997 in Interlochen, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan at age 74, and was buried in 1997 in Interlochen, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan.
Robert lived in the Civic Park area of Flint, Michigan.
He attend ed Civic Park School and graduated from Northern High School in 194
0. He served in the Army-Coastal Artillery Corp, stationed in Africa, Sicily,
and Italy. After the war, he managed the VFW Hall in Flint. He then worked at
the A.C. Sparkplug Division of General Motors for 33 years and retired in 1977.
He was active in the Tall Pine Council of the Boy Scouts. Upon retirement, he
moved to Interlochen, Michigan, where he was active with the Redeemer Lutheran
Church, Golden Fellowship Commission on Aging, and the Interlochen Public Library.
Robert was an avid gardener. He died April 2, 1997.

The notes above are a fine thumbnail sketch, but they miss a lot. Dad was a
natural born leader who usually got his way. Sometimes, however, when he didn't
get his way, he'd get angry and leave. That didn't apply to his family life
though ......
My mother has accused my Dad of being a womanizer. She's even averred that she
would have left him if she'd had the monetary resources to do so. However, that
never happened, and she lived with him until he died in Traverse City, Michigan,
in 1997.
My memories of my father are firmly based in the Boy Scouts of America, Tall
Pine Council, in Flint, Michigan. He was the Scoutmaster of Troop 280 at Gundry
Elementary School, which had another troop, Troop 208, run by our next door
neighbor, Bill Woods. Dad worked at the A.C. Sparkplug Division of General Motors,
also known as "Generous Motors" because they put so much money into scouting.
I've noticed from the Family Tree that Dad's father, Harold Yankle, and my Uncle
Dick were all involved in the scouting movement. Dad was instrumental in starting
Horten Lake Camp (later known as Camp Holaka) in Lapeer Michigan, close to Flint,
Michigan. He paid (from his own pocket) to send me to the Camp Director's Course
to gain my certification to be a Camp Director. That foresight paid off the
next summer when the fellow who was slated to be the Camp Director that summer
left scouting, and I filled the vacancy. My father was an excellent instructor,
teaching his troop to camp, cook, tie knots, and do first aid, skills which
I carry to this day.
Dad wasn't much for demonstrating affection. We respected our father, usually
out of the fear of being severly spanked if we went up against him. He had a
fear of flying, and would have missed my second wedding to Lynne Chapman if
Aunt Marge hadn't agreed to drive to Virginia Beach for the ceremony. He did
make it, though, and served as my Best Man.
Re his fear of flying, Dad told me his own father, Harold, took him up in an
open-cockpit airplane when he was just a boy. The pilot did a roll-over and
my father was falling out of the airplane until his Dad reached out, grabbed
him by the belt, and hauled him back in. I can see where that might have been
traumatizing!
In the last years of his life, my Dad and I finally talked as equal s. He held
my daughter, Aubrey, on his lap and read out loud to her when I told him that
she loved stories. He and Mom had found a new vacation spot in Paradise, Michigan
in the upper peninsula, and he was even planning to move up there. Events caught
up with him, though, and he died before he could put those plans into action.

Robert Palmer Yankle was born April 16, 1922, in Flint, Michigan, the oldest
son of Harold and Marian (Palmer) Yankle. He was the first of the Fourth Generation
of Yankles, all of whom still lived in the state of Michigan. It was this generation
of Yankles, however, who would first move to other states.
Bob grew up in the Civic Park area of Flint and graduated from Flint North ern High School in 1940.
Very soon after graduation, Bob was inducted into the Army and saw serv ice during WWII. He served in Northern Africa, Sicily, and Italy.
Shortly after the war ended, Bob met and married Evelyn Lauryne Holler, who
lived in Flint, Mi. They had 4 children, Bob, Svona, Kathryn, and Glenn Yankle
and lived in Flint, Michigan until he took early retirement from A.C. Sparkplug
and moved to Interlochen, Michigan in 1977.
Bob was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scoutmaster
of Troop 280, and as an active member of a number of Tall Pine Council planning
committees. He was a natural born leader and planner. This desire to be actively
engaged in community affairs carried through to his retirement as well. He took
leading roles serving at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Golden Fellowship, the Commission
on Aging, and the Interlochen Public Library.
Bob enjoyed gardening and he and Evelyn always had the most beautifully landscaped
gardens in their neighborhood. Only months after his 50th Wedding Anniversary,
Bob died of esophageal cancer, exactly 2 weeks shy of his 75 th birthday.

Arthur married Lela Faye Tuttle 14 Jun 1941 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Lela was born 26 Dec 1922.

Genealogy. She was baptized at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Her sponsors
were Hugh Phelan, Jr. (Buddy) and Charlene Phelan Meehan. At age 3, she was
a flower girl in her Aunt Charlene Phelan's wedding to John Meehan. She also
served as a flower girl in her Aunt Doris Tuttle's wedding to Clifford Peters
in 1945.
Kathy graduated from St. Catherine of Siena Grade School in 1956, thence from
Sacred Heart Central High School in 1960. She worked 6 years at Indiana Bell
Telephone Co. and went to night school for 11 years at Indiana University in
Indianapolis. She completed her college education wi th a B.S and M.S. in Education,
then taught 8 years at Holy Name, St. Philip and St. Andrew.

Karen Rose Phelan was the third child of Arthur Joseph
and Fern Holler. She graduated from St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Grade School
in 1954 and Sacred Heart Central High School in 1958. She lived all her pre-married
life at 1215 E. Kelly. She married R. Joseph Lambert in 1960, whom she'd met
in high school. They were the parents of two children. Karen d ed at the age
of 42 from complications of Lupus. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
Karen was diagnosed with Rheumatic Fever as a young child, which left her with
a damaged valve to the heart. Her physical activity was restricted until she
was in the 8th grade. Karen played kickball in 8th grade and was a varsity cheerleader
all 4 years of high school. Upon graduation from high school, she was diagnosed
with Lupus.
R. Joseph Lambert married Rebecca Sue Halliburton, two years after Karen 's
death. He was married 12 years to Rebecca before he died in 1996 from pancreatic
cancer.
