1. Jens Nicolas ASMUSSEN was born on 2 May 1851 in Monkebull, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and died on 25 Jun 1919 in Lyons, Iowa, at age 68. Another name for Jens was JENS NICOLAS ASMUSSEN.

Jens grew up in a farming family. He had little education an became a farm laborer as a young teenager. He joined the Army in Dec 1873 at twenty two years of age after his father died Oct 1973. He bcame a muskatier in the German-Prussian Army. Possibly he had seen and liked the soldiers when they came through the area fighting and beating Denmark in a short war over Schleswig-Holstein in 1864. He would have been twelve years old. He took a leave of absence from Sept 30, 1875 to Oct 1, 1876. We don't know why. He was discharged in Husum on Feb 25, 1880. Soon after, he and Anna Catherine Jacobsen were married on March 7, 1880.

Anna was the first child in her family. She had little education but did know how to read and write. When she was about 10 or 12, she was farmed out or sent from her home to live with a family who ran a large farm. She worked as a gleaner, gathering up the grain left in the fields by the harvesters. She also worked in the house, cleaning, and in the kitchen. A few years later, she became the one in charge of the domesic help. She stayed at the farm, working and living, and probably just went home for visits. She probably met Jens Nicolas Asmussen at this farm. He did farm work and probably worked for the same large farm.
