Johanna married Adolf JOHANNSEN on 25 Sep 1907 in St. John's Lutheran Church, Lyons, Clinton Iowa. Adolf was born on 2 Feb 1882 in Langeness, Germany--Island in the North Sea off Coast, died on 9 Sep 1973 in Marshalltown, Iowa, at age 91, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetary, Marshalltown, Iowa.
[Asmussen.FTW]
Adolf was a kind, sensitive, simple and religious man who knew work and loved his family. He was born and raised on the island of Langeness of the west coast of Germany in the North Sea. Only about 100 people lived on Langeness. There was no electricity when he lived there in the late 1800s. He left the island when he was a young teenager. I am not sure when he came to America or how he settled in Lyons. He had family there. His parents stayed in Germany and he came on his own as a young man. He also had family in Buck Grove, Iowa. He met Johanna Marie Asmussen in Lyons and in the early part of 1907 they agreed to homestead near Presho, SD where the government was giving away land to homesteaders. Heading up the project was Mabel Hardy who had persuaded her boyfriend, Carsten Louis Asmussen to take her there. I believe she envisioned land like Iowa and they would build up the land, make it worth more money and sell it later at a nice profit. Louis and Mabel went out there in 1907, found some land and moved there. Adolf and his younger brother Christopher each got land adjoining theirs. Adolf and Johanna were married in a nice large church wedding at the St. Johns Lutheran Church in Lyons, Iowa on her 25th birthday, September 25, 1907. They moved to Buck Grove, Iowa and farmed on his "Onkel Bill's" farm south of Buck Grove. They also homesteaded the 160 acres in South Dakota. Their first son Laurence, was born in Buck Grove on July 5, 1908. Their next a daugther, Josina, was born in Presho, SD on Oct 11, 1909 during a blinding snow storm. Adolf left Johanna and their young son in their small house and went the 10 miles to Presho to get the midwife in his wagon and horses. On the way back, they ran into a surprise. an early windy, snowy blizzard. Soon the snow was blinding them, he could see nothing but white and had no idea how to get home. The midwife told him to drop the horses' reins and let them find the way home on their own by instinct. They did and Josina was later safely delivered. Christopher had the land next to them. Living and farming in South Dakota was very tough, the land was not good and the weather went from hot to very cold, with a lack of water. They moved back to Buck Grove in 1911 and farmed. They made a shed into a livable house. All their other four children were born in Buck Grove between 1911 and 1917. They added several rooms to the shed house. In 1920 much happened to them. First, Adolf went to Germany to visit his family. In July on the 26th, their young son Marvin, six years old, died in a car accident. He was riding with Adolf. Somehow they went off the road into a creek, I think, and the boy drowned or died from the crash. Adolf would never drive or own a car after that incident. They moved to Marshalltown, Iowa and he ran a tinsmith shop. In 1930 he took Johanna with him to Germany to see his family and homeplace and where her parents were from as well. They also went to the famous Passion Play. On the way back they went to Niagra Falls, then to Flint, Michigan and Rockford, Illinois to visit her sisters. He spoke of falling off a building and almost getting killed in 1932 while tearing down a house for the lumber. They lived at 605 Bromly St. They lived in Marshalltown from late 1920 until 1932. They kept contacts with family in Buck Grove area. After the accident, they moved back to Buck Grove to recuperate and farm again. Leona Beerman and their son Thorwald were married, living and farming in the Buck Grove area where her family was from. When Leona had her first baby, Janice born on Jan 7, 1940, they were there to help her. They each lived in a house on the same farm. After Janice' birth, Adolf and Johanna moved into the smaller house and gave the larger one to Thorwald and Leona. In 1947, they moved back to Marshalltown permanently. He owned his own tin shop which was called, Tinshop Marshalltown Sheet Metal Works and lived at 606 East State until his death.

[Asmussen.FTW]
As a child Dora was assigned to keep up her father's clothes and shoes. She had to wash, iron, sew, repair and keep his clothes ready for him to wear. She cleaned and polished his shoes. Whether this gave her and her father a close bond, I do not know but she was also the one who carried him his lunch to the grocery store most days. She was also close to her mother, maybe because she worked at home with her mother for so many years. While Jens ate lunch in a little office room in the back at a desk, she would wait on any customers. On the day he died in June 1919, she took him his lunch as usual. When he did not come back out of the office after eating she went to check on him and found him dead.
Dora was the last of the Asmussen children to marry. She was married Nov 24, 1920 in Rockford, Ill. but she always lived in Lyons.

[Asmussen.FTW]
Lena was only able to go to school through the third grade. Then she had to work in the homes of the wealty lumber barons in Lyons, Clinton, Iowa. Because they lived so close, she probably worked for the Joyce family who lived on North 3rd St at 19th Ave. No. in a large hous, over 20 rooms, which sat high on a cliff, overlooked the Mississippi River about 4 blocks away. House is still there though not in good condition. Lena said her hardest job was ironing the linen table cloths and the curtains with old and heavy irons that had to be heated over a fire, yet kept clean. She had to keep changing irons as they cooled.
Lena was a very pleasant friendly lady and a good cook. She loved her grandchildren.
Her middle name, Catharina, came from her mother.

Anna Maria Holler was a bird watcher. While living on Frank Street in Flint, Michigan, she had a bird feeder attached to the window sill, just outside of her kitchen breakfast nook. This feeder attracted cardinals, sparrows, nuthatches, tufted titmouse, chickadees, and bohemian waxwings.
She was also an excellent cook, and everybody commented about "Grandma's rolls", hand-made yeast rolls.
Anna Maria was struck by a cable car and lost her left leg. She wore a prosthesis which she strapped on, and walked with canes for most of her adult life.
Anna Maria and Glenn housed students from General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan. One of those students, Lloyd Conn married their daughter, Dorothy.
** Notes from Richard D. Asmussen:
I always thought Anna was very pretty as a young lady but for some reason, in her pictures at least, she had a sour, unhappy look and usually had her arms crossed like she was angry.
She was injured by a street car while she was trying to cross the street in late 1929, about time of stock market crash, I understand. She lost her leg and wore a prosthesis she strapped on, sometimes removed. Some grandchildren were scared by her "leg" when it was off standing by the bed while she napped.

• Occupation: Anna was a salesperson in a store
• Chronic med: Anna had her leg amputated above the knee and wore a prosthesis
Anna married Glenn Lee HOLLER on 15 Nov 1918 in Rockford, Illinois. Glenn was born on 9 Jun 1894 in Saltillo, Indiana, died on 12 Dec 1960 in Flint, Michigan, at age 66, and was buried on 19 Dec 1960 in Sunset Hills, Flint, Michigan.
Glenn Holler grew up in Indiana, but at the age of 13 hopped a freight car and headed out to Idaho. At one point he owned his own cattle ranch, a true cowboy. When World War I started, he tried to enlist in the Army. He was staying in Clinton, Iowa at the time, in the home of Lena Asmussen, sister of Anna Marie Asmussen. When Anna Marie visited her sister and first set eyes on Glenn Holler, she thought to herself, "There's the man I'm going to marry." In fact, she did.
There is some question about the birthdate of Glenn. Robert and Evelyn Yankle and their children, Bob and Svona, visited Frank Holler, Glenn's father, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Robert and Frank were talking about Glenn's age, and Robert mentioned his birthdate. His father exclaimed that Glenn was much younger than Robert had mentioned. When Robert questioned this, Frank averred "I ought to know, son. I was there at his birthin!" When Robert returned to Flint, Michigan, he brought up Glenn's age in front of Anna Maria. When Anna Maria heard how old Glenn really was, she said "I'd never have married you if I knew you were that young!"
Glenn's Mother, Lola Dell Johnson, committed suicide when Glenn was only 5 years old. It's rumored that he didn't get along too well with his step-mother, Nannie Lou Corman, which may have been the reason he left home so early.
