Henry's farm was just down the road from his father's and across the road from his sister, Henrietta, and her husband, John KIRN's farm. It was next door to a SCHAUTZ farm. He married Susanna (GOOD) SCHAUTZ on March 31, 1881. Henry cleared the land and built a small cabin on the property from the lumber. The couple's first child, Ida, was born in that cabin in 1889. The couple sold the farm and moved to Flint, Michigan in or about the mid-1890's.

Henry took work at the Flint Wagon Works and later worked in the Buick Motor Co., holding many assembly jobs. The family lived on Glenwood Ave. in Flint. Their second child, Harold, was born in Flint in 1896. Henry died in 1937 from a cerebral homorrhage as per Genesee Co. death record #447. From the Yankle Chronicle, October 2003:

Henry J.W. Yankle was the first-born son of Frederick and Henrietta (Bontein) Yankle. He was born October 8, 1858 in Dearborn, Michigan. Henry had five siblings: Henrietta, Julia, Lydia, Frederick, and John. About the time that Henry was 7 or 8 years old, his father moved the family from Dearborn to New Haven Township, Michigan where Lydia, Frederick and John were born.

New Haven Township is in Shiawassee County, Michigan, near the city of Owosso. At the time Henry was born, it was a heavily forested wilderness. Only 20 years before, the people who moved to Owosso were called "pioneers." Henry and some of his siblings were born during the time that the Civil War was being fought. Supplies to this part of the country were delivered by canoe, flat barge, and horse carriage.

The Yankles lived on a farm on Riley Road. In later years, Henry purchased his own farm on Riley Road, and lived across the street from his sister Henrietta. Henry cleared the land and built a log cabin with his own hands.

Henry lived next door to David Schautz, and his wife Susanna (Good). David was kicked in the head by a horse and died at the age of 22 from his injuries. Henry struck up a relationship with Susanna and married her on March 31, 1881. Eight years later, their first child, Ida, was born in the log cabin Henry had built.

The couple sold their farm and moved to Flint, Michigan in the mid-1990s. They lived in a home on Glenwood Avenue. Their second child, Harold, was born in Flint.

Henry took work at the Flint Carriage Works and later worked at Buick Motor Company, setting a precedent. Four generations of Yankle descendants have worked for General Motors.

John inherited the family farm on Riley Rd. after his father, Frederick's death, selling the farm later. The couple had three children and lived in the Owosso-Corunna area through their married life. John worked at the Renown Stove Co. as an iron molder. He was a member of the Iron Molder's Union. John's death was listed as "arterial sclerosis" and he died in Caledonia Twshp. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery next to Helena.

From the Yankle Chronicle, October 2003:

John Ezra Yankle was the youngest son of Frederick and Henrietta (Bontein) Yankle. His older brother, Henry, was 17 years old when John was born February 9th, 1976. This pattern was to repeat itself within the Family Tree structure, as the descendants of Henry Yankle are generally 10 to 15 years older than the descendants of John.

When John was 11 years old, tragedy struck the Yankle family when John’s older brother, Frederick, drowned in the Shiawassee river. Had Frederick survived, there may have been another entire branch of Yankle descendants to be included in the Family Tree. Frederick is buried next to his parents. John lived on the family farm at Riley Road, later inheriting it after the death of his father, Frederick Yankle in 1892.

John met and married Helena A. Griep, daughter of August C. Griep and Mary (Kuester). Helena had moved to the United States with her parents at the age of three. They were married at St. John’s Church in Owosso, MI. on May 26, 1897. John and Helena had 3 sons: Arthur, b. April 18, 1899. Richard, b. September 25, 1901, and Barney, b. March 08, 1904.

John and Helena sold the family farm and moved to Corunna, Michigan. John worked at the Renown Stove Co. as an iron molder, and was an active member of the Iron Molder’s Union. Helena was said to have ruled the Yankle family with an “iron hand”, so perhaps it ran in the family.

John lived a long life. He was 82 when he died, having survived his wife’s death by 12 years. There are pictures in the Family Photo Archives of John holding his great granddaughter, Peggy Banghart. He died in 1958.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 24 M    i. Arthur Henry YANKLE was born on 18 Apr 1899 in Owosso, Michigan, died on 14 Dec 1960 in Corunna, Michigan, at age 61, and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Owosso, Michigan.

25 M    ii. Richard John YANKLE was born on 25 Sep 1901 in Owosso, Michigan, died on 27 Jan 1952 in Shiawassee County, Michigan, at age 50, and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Owosso, Michigan.

Richard worked at the Estey Furniture Co., and as a Wood Finisher at Woodard's Furniture Manufacturing in Owosso, Michigan. During World War I, he graduated from an aviation ground school conducted by the Air Force. He died as a result of pneumonia and complications of multiple sclerosis. He is buried at Oakhill Cemetery, next to his grandparents August and Mary GRIEP.

Richard never married and lived with his father, John Yankle for most of his life in Owosso, and later, Corunna, Michigan. He was a frequent visitor at the home of his brother, Arthur, when Arthur lived in Holly, Michigan. Richard was tall and slim.

From the Yankle Chronicle, December, 2004:

Richard John Yankle was the second son of John and Helena (Griep) Yankle, and the grandson of Frederick Yankle. He was born September 25, 1901 in New Haven Township. His older brother, Arthur was two years old when Richard joined the family.

As a young man, Richard worked at the Estey Furniture Company in Owosso, Mi., then followed in the footsteps of Arthur when he became a wood finisher at Woodard’s Furniture Manufacturing. During World War I, Richard graduated from an aviation ground school conducted by the Air Force, but we do not know if he ever used his aviation training, or in what capacity.

John was afflicted at a fairly young age with Multiple Sclerosis, a disease which usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 40 to people who live in a temperate climate. The two people living today who remember Richard, Beryl and Barb Yankle, knew him as “Uncle Rich”. He was tall and slim, and a kind man. They knew of his disease, but it was never talked about within the family.

To some, it might have appeared as if Richard were drunk, because the numbness in his nerves would cause him to stumble. Yet he continued to visit his brothers and their wives (seen in a Family photo with Irene and Helen), joining in on family holidays. Richard lived with his parents, John and Helena Yankle, until he died in 1952 from complications of pneumonia.

+ 26 M    iii. Barney August YANKLE was born on 8 Mar 1904 in Owosso, Michigan, died on 16 May 1986 in Haines City, Florida, at age 82, and was buried in Winter Haven, Florida.
