Josias "Joe"
Cornelius (né BYERS) HANSEN was
born on 13 Nov 1890 in Lyons, Clinton, Iowa. He was christened Dec 25, 1890
in Lyons, Iowa. Joe was born to Adolph and Dora Byers. His birth certificate is filed in the Clinton County, Iowa, courthouse. He had a brother named Frederic who was two years older than he. His parents divorced and Dora married Andreas Hansen, who was a friend of the family and sponsor at Joe's baptism. They moved to a farm outside of Fulton, Illinois, but his brother Frederick remained in Iowa with his Byers grandparents. There is no official record of Joe’s adoption, but he was known as Joe Hansen the rest of his life. His mother, Dora, died of kidney failure and Andreas married Emma Behrens. They moved the family to Floyd Co. Iowa where they settled near the Schroeder family farm. |

Joe married Della Luella SCHROEDER (daughter of Martin SCHROEDER and Marie HORN) on 6 Jan 1916 in Charles City, Floyd Co., Iowa.
Joe died suddenly of a heart attack on 9 Mar 1967 in Nashua, Chickasaw Co., Iowa. He was buried on 11 Mar 1967 in Nashua, Iowa.

In their retirement years Joe and Della moved to a little
two-room house on the outskirts of Nashua near the Cedar River. There they raised
a few chickens, and some sheep.
Della had two mastectomies (due to breast cancer). However,
her death, many years later, was not attributed to cancer, but to heart failure.
After Joe’s death, Della left her home in Nashua and stayed with her daughters
until she was forced to enter a nursing home because of failing health. She
died there in Oct. 1969.

Harden was the only child born to Andreas
and Dora Hansen.
He was born on a farm in Fulton, Illinois where their family lived until his
mother died from heart failure. Andreas and the two boys managed as well as
they could after Dora died. Joe worked in the fields helping Andreas while ten-year-old
Harden boiled potatoes for their meals and tended to chores around the house.
Eventually, Andreas hired Emma to help with the domestic work.
Andreas married Emma and the family moved to a farm west of Nashua, Iowa where
the boys continued to work hard on the family farm. Times were often lean. Once
the family needed meat and Andreas butchered Harden’s pet goat. This was
especially hard on young Harden.
Harden married Ruth Zwanzinger on February 28, 1929. They
made their home on a farm in the Nashua area. They cut, shocked and thrashed
oats together. Corn was picked by hand and shoveled into the crib afterwards.
The cows were milked by hand also. It was exhausting work.
Harden rarely spoke of his younger years but he never forgot
his mother. About 1940, Harden bought a small tombstone, which he loaded into
the trunk of their 1938 Chevrolet along with some mortar. He then drove the
family to Fulton, Illinois and set the tombstone himself on his mother's grave.
(The above information was provided by Harden and Ruth's daughter, Norma
Doris Hansen.)
Ruth ZWANZINGER was born on 21 Jun 1905. She died on 24 Nov 1982 in Iowa and was buried on 27 Nov 1982 in Horton, Bremer Co., Iowa.

Albert married Christina ULLRICH
on 16 Jun 1935 in Silvis, Illinois. Christina ULLRICH was born on 25 Jul 1918
in Marathan, Iowa.
Albert was the youngest of the Hansen sons and the last to
leave home. His father depended heavily on him to manage the family farm. The
Hansen farm was located about a mile from Christina’s (Tina’s) parent’s
farm. When Albert was 18 and Tina was 12, her mother was killed in an car accident
which left her father alone to raise two young girls. Unable to cope, he placed
most of the responsibility on Tina. Albert came and helped out as much as he
could.
Two weeks before Tina’s 17th birthday Albert and Tina
were married. They lived with Tina’s father for about 2 years while also
helping Albert’s father with his farm.
Albert worked at John Deere for 18 years and for the city
of Waterloo for nine years. Tina and Albert bought and rented out apartments
that Tina primarily managed. In 1965 they moved to Long Beach, California, where
they bought and renovated 11 apartment units for rental. In 1972 they sold them
and returned to Waterloo, Iowa. They sold their last rental unit in Waterloo
in 1972 and retired.
After retirement, Albert and Tina spent more time with family
and friends and vacationed in Long Beach, California (for nearly 30 years).
They were also active members of senior groups.
