[Asmussen.FTW]
On July 22, 1795 Nis Rasmussen changed his surname to Asmussen. It is recorded in the church directory just prior to the recording of the birth of Nis and Syster's first child Agatha who was named for Nis' mother. We are told this name change was because Asmussen was a more acceptable German name. His father had changed his name before he died from Rasmus to Asmus but that was when Nis Rasmussen was only a baby. He kept the Rasmussen name until his first child was born. Surnames were also becoming permanent. Nis was now a German, married to a German, living in Germany so he changed his name. Nis' mother had died just one month previous on June 21, 1795. His father had died 21 years earlier when he was just three years old.
Nis and Syster were not married until June 16, 1795. Their first child, Agatha was born a little over one month later. Why they waited so long we don't know. We do know that Syster Franzen's mother died in childbirth when she was only four years old and that her father died in 1788 when she was 16 making her an orphan. Nis and Syster had eight children, six of which grew up, one died at one month, one at five years. They were Agatha, Johann, Asmus, Carsten, Christina and Jurgen. The two that died were named Jurgen. They lived in Monkebull in a home that was in the Asmussen family for three generations of children. At least three were born there, Carsten on Nov 28, 1801, his son Jens Nicolas on May 2. 1851, and his son Carsten Ludewig born March 25, 1881.

It is interesting to note that Syster Franzen's mother died in child birth on Nov 9, 1775 when Syster was only 4 years old. There were other children. Then, her grandmother, her father's mother Magdelena Pauls Franzen died on Christmas day barely one month later. Her father Johann and other family members raised Syster and her brothers and sisters. Her father died Jan 6, 1788 when she was 16 years old making her an orphan. We do not know where she lived or who with after that. She and Nis were not married until June 16, 1795. She was 24 years old at the time as was her husband.

[Asmussen.FTW]
We are not sure of the history of Karen Jorgensdaughter. Grossmutter told us of her grandmother that Karen Jorgensdatter or Jorgensdaughter was the "little rich girl from Denmark" in our family, who was thrown out of her home by her parents with only some expensive shawls, and told never to come back home. She was only a teenager at the time and had become pregnant by a dragoon (horse soldier). We had thought it was a German soldier, but I am told by a researcher that he must have been a Danish soldier, proven by his name? She moved to Arhus, a large seaport city where she lived on Badstuegade St, which is a downtown street a few blocks from the harbor area. See the map. It is a street now of small cityhouses, cafees and sidewalk restaurants. Arhus was and is the 2nd largest city in Denmark. The baby was born illegitimate on June 21, 1824 and named Jacob Jacobsen. The father was the dragoon Jacob Jacobsen. A dragoon is a fancy horse soldier with a fancy uniform and helmet, and he carries a sword with a scabbard and a rifle. Witnesses to the christening or baptism on Jan 16, 1825 (we have copy of church records enclosed) were friends of the couple, Ane Jensdaughter, Ane Pedersdaughter, a P. Nielsen, the butcher Hansen, and a quartermaster Moller and a corporal Lith. The last two were probably service friends of Jacobsen. We have found no information to indicate where she came from. She apparently was not born in the Arhus Domsogn church where the baby was baptized, nor was their a record found of their marriage. She could have been from a nearby town. Or, we know now that she later became Catharina Jurgensen in Drelsdorf, Germany. Maybe her name was actually Catharina Jorgensdaughter (Jorgensdatter) in Denmark and she changed it to Karen to start her new life. Jacob finished his tour in the Army in 1826 and they moved to Germany. They probably went by ship, much easier to travel then by water, to Kiel or Lubeck in Germany. They migrated south to somewhere in the country on the moorland near Luneburg. Jacob is said to have raised bees and sold excellent honey, from the very fragrant rose colored and purple flowers from the heather. He also sold the dried heather stocks which were cut into bricks and dried. It was called turf and it was used to burn for cooking and to provide heat in the Winter. Supposedly people from miles around brought their hives to him for the excellent honey they could get from the rose heather on the moorland. Jacob and Karen had another child, a girl. Jacob Jacobsen died at a young age, maybe in the mid 1830s. Sometime she changed her name in Germany to Catharina Jurgensen, when we do not know. Jurgensen is the German spelling for Jorgensdaughter. The mother Karen, or Catharina) with two young children remarried, we know now to a Diedrich Andresen, probably while she still lived near Luneberg. Or, she could have gone north toward home in Denmark, made it to Drelsdorf on her own and then remarried.. Anyway, they had two additional children. They lived in the town of Drelsdorf or maybe in a smaller town just south of Drelsdorf called Bohmstedt. We are told her other children and her 2nd husband all died before she did. Her son Jacob learned the tailoring trade. He worked his trade from a shop and also in the people's homes. He married Anna Maria Hansen on Feb 26, 1852. He died Feb 16, 1879. Catharina (Karen, the danish girl), who never went home, outlived both husbands and all four of her children. Possibly she lived to attend the wedding of her oldest granddaughter who was married March 7, 1880. We have not located when or where she died. Now that we know to look for the name of Catharina Andresen or Diedrich Andresen and to look in Bohmstedt maybe we will learn more.
Noted events in her life were:
• Excommunicated: Between 1823 and 1824. by family when she became pregnant by a soldier
• Residence: 1824. lived in an apt. on Badstuegade St, Aarhus,Dk
• Residence: 1826. near Luneburg with Jacob Jacobsen, then moved to Drelsdorf later.
• Residence: Between 1840 and 1880. near Drelsdorf, Germany
• Baptism: 24 Jun 1824. her illegitimate baby Jacob was 1st baptized at home
• Children: had two children with Jacob Jacobsen and two children with 2nd husband. She outlived all of them.
• Remarried: Abt 1840. Diedrich Andresen and had two more children
• Remarried: Abt 1840. Jacob Jacobsen died about 1835 leaving her with 2 small children. She remarried and sometime moved north to Drelsdorf. There is a name mentioned of Diedrich Andresen, and they may have lived in Bohnstedt near Drelsdorf. They apparently had two children.
• NAME CHANGE: She seems to have changed her name to Catharina Jurgensen in Germany.
