16. Henry J. W. YANKLE, son of Frederick YANKLE and Henrietta BONTEIN , was born on 8 Oct 1858 in Dearborn, Michigan, died on 8 Apr 1937 in Flint, Michigan, at age 78, and was buried in West Haven Cemetery, Shiawassee County, Michigan.
These notes were compiled by David Scott Yankle in his genealogical research of the Yankle family.
Henry was the first-born child of Frederick and Henrietta (BONTEIN) YANKLE. Henry had five siblings: Henrietta (YANKLE) KIRN, b. Sept. 20, 1861, d. May 21, 1936, Julia (YANKLE) HERMAN, b. June 1863, d. Oct. 19, 1941, Lydia B. (YANKLE) HENNION, b. May 8, 1867, d. July 17, 1942, Frederick E. YANKLE, b. 1872, d. June 11, 1887 and John Ezra YANKLE, b. Feb. 9, 1876, d. April 9, 1958.
Henry and his parents moved to New Haven Township, Shiawassee County in or about 1865 from Dearborn, Michigan. The family lived on Riley Road. Henry later purchased his own farm on Riley Road. Henry's farm was just down the road from his father's and across the road from his sister, Henrietta, and her husband, John KIRN's farm. It was next door to a SCHAUTZ farm. He married Susanna (GOOD) SCHAUTZ on March 31, 1881. Henry cleared the land and built a small cabin on the property from the lumber. The couple's first child, Ida, was born in that cabin in 1889. The couple sold the farm and moved to Flint, Michigan in or about the mid-1890's.
Henry took work at the Flint Wagon Works and later worked in the Buick Motor Co., holding many assembly jobs. The family lived on Glenwood Ave. in Flint. Their second child, Harold, was born in Flint in 1896. Henry died in 1937 from a cerebral homorrhage as per Genesee Co. death record #447. His funeral services were held at Evangelical Church on Second Ave. in Flint. The minister H.I. VOELKER officiated. He and Susanna are buried in the West Haven Cemetery, New Haven Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan.
From the Yankle Chronicle, October 2003:
Henry J.W. Yankle was the first-born son of Frederick and Henrietta (Bontein) Yankle. He was born October 8, 1858 in Dearborn, Michigan. Henry had five siblings: Henrietta, Julia, Lydia, Frederick, and John. About the time that Henry was 7 or 8 years old, his father moved the family from Dearborn to New Haven Township, Michigan where Lydia, Frederick and John were born.
New Haven Township is in Shiawassee County, Michigan, near the city of Owosso. At the time Henry was born, it was a heavily forested wilderness. Only 20 years before, the people who moved to Owosso were called "pioneers." Henry and some of his siblings were born during the time that the Civil War was being fought. Supplies to this part of the country were delivered by canoe, flat barge, and horse carriage.
The Yankles lived on a farm on Riley Road. In later years, Henry purchased his own farm on Riley Road, and lived across the street from his sister Henrietta. Henry cleared the land and built a log cabin with his own hands.
Henry lived next door to David Schautz, and his wife Susanna (Good). David was kicked in the head by a horse and died at the age of 22 from his injuries. Henry struck up a relationship with Susanna and married her on March 31, 1881. Eight years later, their first child, Ida, was born in the log cabin Henry had built.
The couple sold their farm and moved to Flint, Michigan in the mid-1990s. They lived in a home on Glenwood Avenue. Their second child, Harold, was born in Flint.
Henry took work at the Flint Carriage Works and later worked at Buick Motor Company, setting a precedent. Four generations of Yankle descendants have worked for General Motors.
Henry married Susanna GOOD on 31 Mar 1881 in New Haven Township, Michigan.
The child from this marriage was:
17. Susanna GOOD, daughter of Rudolph GOOD and Margaret HUBER , was born on 10 Jan 1861 in Ontario, Canada, died on 7 Jul 1940 in Owosso, Michigan, at age 79, and was buried in West Haven Cemetery, Shiawassee County, Michigan.
These notes were compiled by David Scott Yankle in his genealogical research of the Yankle family.
b. Jan. 10, 1861 in Ontario, Canada, d. July 7, 1940 in Owosso, Michigan. Her parents were Rudolph and Margaret (HUBER) GOOD, she was the seventh child. She married David SCHAUTZ b. 1860, in 1880 in New Haven Twsp. He died in 1882, it has been noted he was kicked by a horse and died from that injury. David was the son of Godfrey (Gottfried) SCHAUTZ . Susanna is listed in the 1880 census as living in the home of Godfrey and Barbara SCHAUTZ with David. Also listed in that household is Susanna's mother Margaret GOOD age 58.
Susanna married Henry J.W. YANKLE on March 31, 1888 in New Haven Twshp. Their witnesses were Lydia YANKLE and Edwin HENNION, who were married later that same year. Henry's farm adjoined farms owned by the SCHAUTZ families. Henry and Susanna had two children, Ida May YANKLE b. Dec. 24, 1889 in New Haven Township and Harold Fredrick YANKLE b. May 7, 1896 in Flint, Michigan. Susanna and Henry moved from the farm in New Haven Twshp. after Henry suffered problems with exposure to the sun. They moved to Flint in the mid 1890's. Susanna lived in Flint, at 1327 Glenwood Ave. until Henry's death in 1937 and her own death in 1940. Susanna's last days were spent at The Morningstar Home in Owosso were she died. Her cause of death was listed as "Cardiac Failure". The Reverend Fred KIRN (her nephew) officiated at her services. Susanna had five sisters Caroline (GOOD) SCHAUTZ, Salena " Lena", (GOOD) KIRN, Elizabeth (GOOD) ISCHE, Margaret "Maggie" (GOOD) VOLKMER, Anna Barbara (GOOD) FRYE and three brothers Jacob, Levi and John GOOD.
Susanna married Henry J. W. YANKLE on 31 Mar 1881 in New Haven Township, Michigan.
18. William Allen PALMER, son of Vitson (Vincent) PALMER and Eliza DERRICK , was born on 7 Jun 1853 in Cayuga Co. New York, died on 2 Jul 1924 in Flint, Michigan, at age 71, and was buried in Gracelawn Cemetery, Flint, Michigan.
Willian was born in New York on June 7, 1853. In his obituary in 1924, there was a brother noted as Adelbert and a sister who was Maggie MEADE in Detroit. In the 1880 census, it noted that Adelbert and a brother, Alvin, lived with him and his family in Carson City, Michigan. William had many different jobs throughout his life. He was a Saloon Keeper, Traveling Agent, Salesman, and Union Steward. In the 1880 census, William is listed in Carson City, Michigan, with Lida, daughter Kitty (Kathryn), his brother Adelbert, who's occupation is listed as "loafer" in the census. His brother, Alvin, is also listed as a "laborer". In the next entry is Eliza SMITH, his mother-in-law, and Frank and George SMITH, who are brothers-in-law. He lived with his family in Carson City, Michigan and possibly Ithaca and Flint, Michigan. He died in 1924 and is buried in Gracelawn Cemetery in Flint, Michigan.
William married Lida Cady SMITH on 16 Nov 1877 in Carson City, Michigan.
The child from this marriage was:
19. Lida Cady SMITH, daughter of Charles W. SMITH and Eliza CADY , was born on 27 Mar 1861 in Grass Lake, Michigan, died on 8 Jan 1917 in Flint, Michigan, at age 55, and was buried in Gracelawn Cemetery, Flint, Michigan.
Lida, b. 1861, was born in Grass Lake in Jackson Co., Michigan to Charles W. and Eliza (CADY) SMITH. She had many siblings. The 1860 and 1870 censuses list the family in Grass Lake. She married William A. PALMER in 1877 in Carson City, Michigan. It's noted in her obituary that she and William lived in Ithaca, Michigan for a while. The 1900 census placed William and Lida living in Flint, where they lived until her death in 1917. Lida died of "Cancer of the Bladder" and is buried in Gracelawn Cemetery in Flint, Michigan.
Lida married William Allen PALMER on 16 Nov 1877 in Carson City, Michigan.
20. Frank Milton HOLLER, son of John Wesley HOLLER and Margaret Marshall (Cornwell) ROBERTS , was born on 5 Mar 1873, died on 19 May 1960 in Morgan County, Martinsville, Indiana, at age 87, and was buried on 21 May 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Noted events in his life were:
• Birth: 5 Mar 1873. Satillo, IN
• Death: 19 May 1960. Franklin, IN

Frank married Lola Dell JOHNSON on 28 Sep 1892 in Clark County, Indiana.
Noted events in their marriage were:
• Marriage: Marriage, 28 Sep 1892. Clark County, IN
The child from this marriage was:
10 i. Glenn Lee HOLLER (born on 9 Jun 1894 in Saltillo, Indiana - died on 12 Dec 1960 in Flint, Michigan)
21. Lola Dell JOHNSON, daughter of Isaac Jacob JOHNSON and Catherine FREED , was born about 1872 in Orange County, North East Township, Indiana, died on 15 Jul 1899 in Saltillo, Indiana, about age 27, and was buried on 17 Jul 1899 in Saltillo Cemetery, Indiana.
Lola D. Johnson was born in 1872 to Jacob and Catherine (Freed) Johnson. The Johnson family lived in North East Township, Orange County, Indiana. Of her father, Jacob, it was said:
"Isaac Jacob Johnson, a native of Lincoln County, Kentucky, is the eighth in a family of seventeen children, born to Luke and Susan (Stines) Johnson. The Stines family was among the first to brave Indian perils and settle in Kentucky, and Luke Johnson, who was a native of Maryland, also went there at an early age and was there married. He died at sixty-eight years of age, and his wife at ninety-seven.
Jacob Johnson was born April 8, 1815; immigrated to Orange County, Indiana, in 1838, where he began working as a farm hand for a mere pittance. By close economy and industry he has secured a farm of 320 acres of good land.
The four children born to this marriage with Elizabeth Clements in 1840 are: Eliza A., James L., Martha S., and John D. The mother died in 1850, and for his second wife, Mr. Johnson selected Catherine Freed, by whom he is the father of these children: Mary E., William M., Henry H., Amanda E., Thomas N., Laura E., Oliver L., Allie M., Lola D., Joseph F., and Louis M. Altogether, Mr. Johnson is the father of fifteen living children. He is one of the highly respected men of his township and an enterprising citizen."
Lola, with all her brothers and sisters, are listed in the 1880 Census. At the time, she was 8 years old, while her father was 65, and Catherine Freed, her mother, was 45. Her father, then, was a relatively old man when Lola was born. Yet he fathered two more children, Joseph F. Johnson in 1875, and Louis M., birth year unknown.
The next official record concerning Lola is from the Clark County Indiana Marriage Records, 1891-1896, Books P -S, Index of Brides and Grooms, compiled by Ruth M. Slevin, published by the Stevens Memorial Museum Genealogy Library. That index lists a marriage on 28 September 1892 between the bride Johnson, Lolla (Lola) D., and groom Haller (Holler), Frank M., Book P., Page 418. Lola would have been about 20 years old, while Frank was 21.
Interestingly, Margaret "Madge" Gertrude Holler, was born July 6th, 1872, 2 months before her parents were officially married. According to Kathy Phelan, this was not uncommon in the late 1800's, because every town did not have their own pastor or minister or priest. A young couple would often post a proclamation, called a "wedding ban", within the local church, stating their intention to marry as soon as a traveling minister could conduct the ceremony. Before that, however, they would often set up house together, and begin raising a family. Two years after they were married, they had a son, Glenn Holler, who was born June 9th, 1894. Three years after Glenn, Harry B. Holler was born, on October 29, 1897.
Of their life together, very little is known. The next official record concerning Lola Johnson was a notice in the local newspaper, the Graphic, in THE GRAPHIC - Campbellsburg, Indiana
Saturday, July 15, 1899. The article read:
"SUICIDE. Mrs. Ol (Lola Dell Johnson) Holler Ends Her Life by Taking Strychnine.
"Just because I am tired of living," was the answer made by Mrs. Ol Holler on her deathbed Sunday morning at her home in Saltillo when asked by her husband why she had taken a fatal dose of strychnine. Her wish for death was gratified at one o'clock; p.m. amid untold agony about five hours after the poison was taken. Sunday morning her husband went to the depot and during his absence she took the poison which she had concealed in a bureau drawer and when and how she procured the drug is not known. A neighbor was sent for and the facts made known to her who immediately notified Mr. Holler who hastened home and immediately summoned physicians who did all their power to save the unfortunate woman, but too late, as she was having convulsions, one immediately after another, until death ended it all. For some time, Mrs. Holler's health had been very bad and she had given signs of despondency in consequence, and it is believed this so unset her mental balance as to cause her to take her own life. The deceased was 27 years old and leaves a husband and three small children, who have the sympathy of the entire town and neighborhood in the sad hours of bereavement. Eld. B. F. Martin of Claysville conducted the funeral services Monday at 11 o'clock after which the body was laid to rest in the Saltillo Cemetery."
The three children left behind by Lola Johnson were Madge, age 7, Glenn, age 5, and Harry, age 2. While Madge and Glenn may have had dim memories of their mother, almost certainly, Harry did not. Jacob Johnson died almost a year after Lola's death, at the age of 84
Noted events in her life were:
• Birth: 1872.
• Death: 15 Jul 1899. Salitillo, IN
• Burial: 17 Jul 1899. Saltillo, IN

She also worked in the house, cleaning, and in the kitchen. A few years later, she became the one in charge of the domesic help. She stayed at the farm, working and living, and probably just went home for visits. She probably met Jens Nicolas Asmussen at this farm. He did farm work and probably worked for the same large farm.

24. John A. CHAPMAN was born on 18 Apr 1844 in Georgia and died about 1924 in Cullman, Alabama, about age 80. Another name for John was John CHAPMAN.
We know that John was married twice and to have another son, William, by his first wife. In 1900, at the time of the Census where we got the information on John and his children, he was a widower. He passed away (we believe) in the summer of 1923, as Ruth Chapman (daughter of Robert Lee) remembers her dad leaving the family to go to the funeral and thinking she was maybe 2 or 3 when this occurred.
According to Janice Pearl (granddaughter of Neler Chapman) she remembers her grandmother (Neler) telling her that John's first wife was the sister to Sarah Jane (his second wife). John also served in the Civil War. She also remembered being told that John's father was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. It was also told to Janice by Neler that John's mother's family hated him so much that after she died, they tried to kill him. However, in the 1900 and 1910 Census records from Cullman County, Alabama it is listed that John's father was from South Carolina and his mother from Georgia. Thus leading us to believe that it was his mother (not his father) who was Cherokee Indian.
According to the Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia, 1861-1865, John claimed residence in Paulding County and enlisted in A Co., 40th Inf. Reg. GA. The enlistment date is March 10, 1862. Also, according to the Roster, John was a Private, captured at Vicksburg, MS, on 7/4/1863. He deserted at Atlanta, Georgia on 8/15/1864, then received at Louisville, KY, where he took an oath of allegiance to the United States government and was released to remain north of the Ohio River during the war. This event occurred on 11/11/1864.
I would like to point out that according to military dates when John deserted (August 15, 1864), it would have been during Sherman's march through Alabama. A battle that his company first began on July 20th left to go to other locations and back to Atlanta on August 7, 1864. Also note that John's wife's father was rumored to have been killed when Sherman marched through Atlanta, thus giving us a reason to understand why he left.
From notes by Denise A. Chapman
John married Sarah Jane KILE on 13 Sep 1877 in Paulding County, Georgia.
The child from this marriage was:
25. Sarah Jane KILE, daughter of Washington Allen KILE and Tabitah Elizabeth GREEN , was born about 1859 in Georgia and died in Dec 1896 in Cullman, Alabama, about age 37.
According to Janice Pearl (granddaughter of Neler Chapman) She was told by her grandmother (Neler) that Sarah was 5 when Sherman marched through Atlanta, Georgia and Sarah's father was killed during the civil war. Sarah's family was rumored to be from Ireland. Sarah is buried either in Cullman or just North of Cullman, Alabama. She is believed to be buried in Good Hope Cemetery in Cullman, though her grave is not marked.
In the 1900 and 1910 Census Records of Cullman, Alabama, Sarah's Children are listed, but she is not. However, it does list the mother of the children as being born in Georgia.
On records from Cullman County, Alabama death records for Dec.1886-Dec.1908 there is listed a Mrs. Chapman born in Georgia and who is buried in Good Hope Cemetery. It stated she died of Consumption and the attendant was Dr. R.H. Baird. Though there is no guarantee of this being Sarah, we assume based on the collected information on her possible birth and known to be dead before 1900 (as not being listed in the Census records) this is her. It places her death as December 1896 and being 38 years old when she died.
On the 1880 Paulding County Census Records we find John A. Chapman with wife SJ. She is listed as being 20 years old and being born in Georgia. It also states that both her mother and father wer born in Georgia. Sara Jane and John Chapman were listed in the book "Paulding County Georgia Marriages 1834-1906 by Jeannette Austin" as being married on 9/13/1877.

From information gathered by Faye (Chapman) Harrington and Denise Chapman about Samuel and Alethia Smith:
Samuel and Alethia lived their entire married life in Piedmont, South Carolina. We believe that Samuel worked in the mill. We know they had 15 children they raised as well as three of their grandchildren. They are remembered as being good, honest, hard-working people. O.B. Chapman recalls when he and Esther Lee married, Alethia gave them a refrigerator - not an ice box that required blocks of ice but one with a motor that sat on top of it. O.B. Chapman remembers Alethia as a small lady with sparkling white hair, neat as a pin, with a house that was always very neat and clean.
Samuel and Alethia are buried side by side in Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont, South Carolina. The cemetery is off highway 86 going into Piedmont. They are located in the front, right-hand section of Rose Hill. The surrounding markers have the name Hollingsworth on them. There are many Smiths and
Paynes buried at Rose Hill along with many of Samuel and Alethia's children. Faye Chapman Harrington and Mary Payne McLemore are presently trying to locate as many graves as possible. Faye is a great granddaughter and Mary a granddaughter of Samuel and Alethia.
